ROAAOMS Strategic Plan
VISION
By 2008, the Resident Organization of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will be known as an organization that:
introduces oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and dental students to the processes of organized dentistry and medicine in general, and with oral and maxillofacial surgery in particular.
allows interested individuals to gain experience with governmental, legislative and economic issues that confront the profession of dentistry and the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
provides a mechanism for ideas, suggestions and comments from all members to be voiced at a national level along with a forum for discussion of common interests and problems.
promotes and encourages participation of oral and maxillofacial surgery residents in research projects and fellowships for the advancement of the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
aids in the recruitment of quality individuals into accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs.
assists residents in indoctrination to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as progression through the training process and preparation for board certification.
MISSION
The resident organization is an integral component of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons comprised of residents enrolled in ADA accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs. The resident organization discusses issues pertaining to the education, training and scope of practice of OMS. The residents will learn about the practices and issues facing the profession from AAOMS members and introduce and educate dental students about the specialty of OMS.
PROGRAM GOALS
Goal 1 Improve and enhance communication between its members and its affiliates.
Goal 2 Educate residents concerning the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and issues facing the specialty.
Goal 3 Assist in the recruitment and retention of quality professionals in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Goal 4 Demonstrate the value of oral and maxillofacial surgery to OMS residents, dental students, public, professional and predental audiences.
PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Goal 1 Improve and enhance communication between its members and its affiliates.
- Objective 1.1 Strengthen communication between residents and faculty.
- Strategy 1.1.1 Continue a resident and faculty member liaison to CRET and FS.
- Strategy 1.1.2 Continue to invite faculty members to attend and present at annual ROAAOMS business meeting.
- Strategy 1.1.3 Continue ROAAOMS Faculty Section Liaison to present at annual Faculty Section business meeting.
- Strategy 1.1.4 Continue to have ROAAOMS Chair present an annual report to the AAOMS Board of Trustees.
- Objective 1.2 Improve and ensure accuracy of resident member database.
- Strategy 1.2.1 Develop and include a resident member verification form within each issue of Resident Reach.
- Strategy 1.2.2 Designate resident home address as primary mailing address.
- Strategy 1.2.3 Collaborate with the Committee on Residency, Education and Training (CRET) to stress the importance of accurate reporting of resident information within the annual questionnaire.
- Strategy 1.2.4 District Representatives to collaborate with Program Liaisons to verify resident information.
- Strategy 1.2.5 Continue to disseminate an annual resident verification mailing.
- Strategy 1.2.6 Continue to include resident contact information in AAOMS Membership Directory.
- Objective 1.3 Designate and improve the involvement of Program Liaisons.
- Strategy 1.3.1 District Representatives to identify a Program Liaison for each program within their respective districts.
- Strategy 1.3.2 District Representatives to disseminate pertinent ROAAOMS information to Program Liaisons monthly.
- Strategy 1.3.3 Program Liaisons to disseminate ROAAOMS activities to residents within their respective programs.
- Strategy 1.3.4 Program Liaisons to encourage attendance and involvement of residents and faculty at the ROAAOMS annual business meeting and program.
- Objective 1.4 Increase relevance of quarterly issues of Resident Reach.
- Strategy 1.4.1 Develop articles to educate and inform ROAAOMS members of the benefits and services of AAOMS and related organizations (i.e., OMSPAC, ABOMS, ASI, OMSF, OMSNIC, ASDA, ADSA, vendors, etc.).
- Objective 1.5 Promote awareness and utilization of the resident section within the AAOMS Website.
- Strategy 1.5.1 Continue to maintain relevant information specific to residents regarding available opportunities (open resident positions, fellowships, career line, overseas missions).
- Strategy 1.5.2 Continue Resident Reach electronically via the AAOMS Website.
- Strategy 1.5.3 Promote educational resources on the AAOMS website off of the residency home page.
Goal 2 Educate residents concerning the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and issues facing the specialty.
- Objective 2.1 Inform residents of the organized role of OMS concerning legislative affairs.
- Strategy 2.1.1 Encourage involvement within OMSPAC to educate residents of the political issues that confront the OMS profession on the national and state levels.
- Strategy 2.1.2 Encourage involvement within the Government Relations annual open forum.
- Objective 2.2 Encourage non-clinical involvement in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
- Strategy 2.2.1 Educate Chief Residents of the opportunity to teach part time after completion of training.
- Strategy 2.2.2 Promote resident achievements in Resident Reach and AAOMS Residency Website.
- Strategy 2.2.3 Promote grants that encourage residents to enter academics.
- Strategy 2.2.4 Promote resident community service and advertise the resident community service and leadership award.
- Strategy 2.2.5 Distribute informational packets at resident organization business meeting and program.
- Objective 2.3 Assist in the smooth transition from residency to private practices.
- Strategy 2.3.1 Specific articles pertaining to practice management within the Resident Reach.
- Strategy 2.3.2 Practice management presentations at the ROAAOMS annual business meeting and program.
- Strategy 2.3.3 Inform residents of career opportunities via AAOMS Career Line.
- Strategy 2.3.4 Continue to disseminate annual mailing to Chief residents.
- Objective 2.4 Assist residents with initial hospital credentialing issues.
- Strategy 2.4.1 Specific articles pertaining to hospital credentialing within the Resident Reach.
- Strategy 2.4.2 Hospital credentialing presentations at the ROAAOMS annual business meeting and program.
- Strategy 2.4.3 Support documentation of centralized resident surgical log.
- Strategy 2.4.4 Encourage residents to join their state societies
- Objective 2.5 Advocate resident involvement within the AAOMS Annual Meeting.
- Strategy 2.5.1 Develop an annual business and education program
- Strategy 2.5.2 Continue to promote annually the call for abstracts for oral presentations and posters to residents.
- Objective 2.6 Promote organized dentistry.
- Strategy 2.6.1 Promote AAOMS membership benefits to residents.
- Strategy 2.6.2 Promote activities and issues that face the association.
- Strategy 2.6.3 Pursue a voting seat in the AAOMS House of Delegates.
- Strategy 2.6.4 Increase involvement in the related organizations such as: ADA, ASDA, ADSA, NIDCR, etc.
- Strategy 2.6.5 Continue to disseminate annual mailing to all first year residents
- Objective 2.7 By 2006, develop a free-standing midwinter program liaison resident meeting
- Strategy 2.7.1 Create a grassroots initiative in obtaining residents at the local level to assist ROAAOMS in its mission and objectives
- Strategy 2.7.2 Provide a training session for program liaisons on the benefits of becoming involved in ROAAOMS/AAOMS
- Strategy 2.7.3 Educate program liaisons about parliamentary procedures of the AAOMS
- Strategy 2.7.4 Create a grassroots initiative in creating a cadre of individuals who may seek to sit on future AAOMS committees post OMS training
Goal 3 Assist in the recruitment and retention of quality professionals in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
- Objective 3.1 Emphasize the importance of membership in organized dentistry to chief residents.
- Strategy 3.1.1 Encourage chief residents to begin AAOMS membership application process six (6) months prior to residency completion.
- Strategy 3.1.2 Distribute membership applications at ROAAOMS annual business meeting and program.
- Strategy 3.1.3 Continue to promote AAOMS graduated dues schedule to chief resident.
- Strategy 3.1.4 Encourage board certification among graduated residents.
- Objective 3.2 Support residents during training process.
- Strategy 3.2.1 Develop Resident Survival Guide by 2006
- Strategy 3.2.2 Distribute Resident Handbook to all first year residents.
- Strategy 3.2.3 Specific articles related to stress management and substance abuse within Resident Reach.
- Strategy 3.2.4 Provide an informational forum for residents to discuss pertinent issues facing their personal lives, which may effect their completion of training.
- Strategy 3.2.5 Review and monitor attrition data developed by CRET.
- Strategy 3.2.6 Inform residents of resources available for filing grievances concerning their training.
Goal 4 Demonstrate the value of oral and maxillofacial surgery to OMS residents, dental students, public, professional and predental audiences.
- Objective 4.1 Enhance relationship between OMS residents and predoctoral students.
- Strategy 4.1.1 Presentations to all OMS training programs:
- to encourage positive interaction between OMS residents and predoctoral students to enhance referrals;
- Improve atmosphere of predoctoral oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics;
- Collaborate with OMS faculty to enhance educational experiences of predoctoral students.
- Objective 4.2 Educate predoctoral students as to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
- Strategy 4.2.1 Presentations to all dentals schools:
- To educate predoctoral students about oral and maxillofacial surgery practice;
- To recruit predoctoral students into the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
- Enhance and confirm our position as a dental specialty;
- Educate predoctoral students on appropriate referrals;
- Expose predoctoral students to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department in their dental schools.
- Objective 4.3 Support ASDA and HOSA in their endeavors to educate high school and elementary school students to the profession of dentistry and the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
